KAMAAL WILLIAMS / HENRY WU – The Return Tour @Velvet Underground (March 3, 2019)

An ocean away from South London UK, Kamaal Williams, the latest project spearheaded by Henry Wu (formerly Yussef Kamaal, Breakthrough Act of 2017 Jazz FM Awards) made its live debut in Toronto.

Equally adventurous, many braced the frigid temperatures on a Sunday night to see Wu’s Canadian appearance at the Velvet Underground.


A sold out, diverse audience compromised of knowledgeable music loyalists recognized a new, unique instrumental force in Wu, sure to create larger ripples in the not-so-distant future.

Flanked by American bassist Marlon Spears and drummer Greg Paul, this three-piece band have generated considerable fanfare as they slowly trekked across North America for this debut tour.

Wu Incorporating sparse soulful keyboard notes, challenging bandmates Paul and Spears to resonant circular feedback building rhythmic complex sound landscapes, architecturally amassing sound note commitments, exhaling for musical synchronized answers.


Interactions varied on stage, generated some fantastically complex propagations. Random sounds undergo a phase transition into a synchronized state for the audience.
