Japanese Taiko and Music Group Presents
Ancient Rhythms | Future Echoes
2019/2020 Season

Nagata Shachu, Toronto’s premiere Japanese Taiko and Music Group, is pleased to announce their 21st season. Ancient Rhythms | Future Echoes will includethree performances at the Al Green Theatre: HIBIKI (reverberations), TAIKO X TURNTABLES!, and KAZÉ (wind).

The season will open with HIBIKI (reverberations) on Saturday, November 30, 2019. This dramatic production, with lighting design by Chris Malkowski, features a collection of powerful and rarely performed works from Nagata Shachu’s extensive repertoire. The program, with a cast of seven musicians, will include masked drumming and dance, the three-stringed shamisen, bamboo flutes, vocals and a vast array of Japanese taiko and percussion instruments.

On March 28, 2020, the worlds of traditional taiko and turntabalism will collide for the first time in TAIKO X TURNTABLES!, a unique and exhilarating fusion of two very different genres. Featuring both composed and improvised works, Nagata Shachu and DJ Yanase will share a musical dialogue playing off of each other’s powerful beats and melodic themes.

In KAZÉ (wind), the season finale concert on Saturday, June 20, 2020, Nagata Shachu will collaborate with master shinobue (bamboo flute) player Toki Tatara. KAZÉ is a concert that will seamlessly combine the worlds of shinobue, taiko, and the three-stringed shamisen while exploring new possibilities for these traditional instruments.

Nagata Shachu includes founder Kiyoshi Nagata, and Aki Takahashi, Tony Nguyen, Jason Huang, Naoya Kobayashi, Andrew Siu and apprentices Eriko Murata and Lisa Naito.

Based in Toronto, Nagata Shachu has enthralled audiences internationally with its mesmerizing and heart-pounding performances of the Japanese drum (taiko) since its formation in 1998. While rooted in the folk drumming traditions of Japan, the ensemble’s principal aim is to rejuvenate this ancient art form by producing innovative and exciting music that seeks to create a new voice for the taiko.
